A Guide to Journaling for Mental Health

Silly banter. Senseless gossip. Genuine connection. The cathartic sharing we all recognize and rely on in our relationships started to feel different for me. I found some of the people I connected and confided in a great deal, proved to be untrustworthy. I evidently decided those relationships needed an adjustment. That adjustment, that little something different, was journaling for my mental health.

I decided to journal for my mental health instead of relying on the people around me to bounce my thoughts off of. I needed a healthier and more productive way of expressing and understanding my feelings.

The first thing was reintroducing myself to the smooth, blank pages that made up my journal. Spending the necessary time to actually enjoy my own company and validate my own thoughts. To physically write out what was running through my mind onto the paper of my journal allowing me to visualize and process my thoughts.

I sat and remembered what I had fallen in love with a couple of years ago, this very thing. I truly forgotten just how much journaling helped. It not only helped transform and blossom my relationships with the people around me, my relationship with God, but ultimately the relationship with myself. Journaling was my escape.

When to Start Journaling for Mental Health

Why did I ever stop? When did the switch happen from trusting my own discernment to desiring it from others?

I quickly came to remember the very reason I stopped writing in the past. The once blank pages of my journal quickly transformed into an endless diary of personal thoughts and feelings, hopes and dreams, and fears and prayers. I wrote my journal for me, not an audience. However, an audience is exactly what it had. While of course it was not as if I was confessing true crime on these pages, it was mine. Something that truly belonged to me. As a result, the sanctuary I created within the walls of my journal, the place to evade judgment and criticism was ultimately destroyed. After that violation of privacy, I allowed my tool for managing my mental health to slip away through my fingers.

Those around us cannot and should not be our sole source of connection. With this reminder, I am connecting with myself again through journaling. Of course I still have friends, best friends in fact, whom I confide in a great deal. Above all, getting back into journaling is helping me realize not only can I provide myself a safe space for my thoughts, but also that I am and will always be my very own best friend.

Journal Prompts

You can use prompts when you start to feel uninspired and unsure of where to begin pen on paper. A simple prompt to spark your thoughts and sometimes even your unconscious. As I start my journaling journey again, I’ve complied a list of journal prompts to get you started as well.

  • What am I grateful for this week? Gratitude prompts.
  • How am I feeling?
  • Write 5 affirmations.
  • Write 5 best/challenging moments in life.
  • What is triggering my stress or anxiety?
  • What are my short term goals? Long term? Manifestation prompts.
  • Mindfulness prompts.
